“My Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:40).

What is God’s will?

These words from our Savior (quoted above) give us such incredible insight into the will of the one who created heaven and earth and all things, including you and me.

God’s will is that everyone who looks to Jesus and believes in him as the Savior who takes away the sin of the world shall have eternal life. Not only that, but God’s will is also that Jesus will raise those believers up at the Last Day, so that they might be with him forever in heaven.

Throughout the pages of Scripture, we see God’s heart on vivid display. And we hear the unbreakable promises that he makes to his people as well.

From Genesis to the final words of Revelation, God clearly shows us how he feels about us and what he has done to save us from our sins. In his great love and infinite mercy, he gave us Scripture so that we would know how he feels about us and what he has done to save us beyond a shadow of a doubt.

You see, God’s will for his people isn’t a wish or merely hopeful thinking.

God’s will is what he has decreed will happen. When Jesus said that God’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son with saving faith in him will have eternal life, that is a sure and certain fact.

We don’t have to be afraid or wonder if God actually loves us. The devil’s whispers and accusations waft away like smoke on the wind. God means what he says, and what he said through the perfect life, innocent death, and triumphant resurrection of his Son Jesus is that our sins are forgiven. We’re God’s dearly loved children. There’s a home in heaven waiting for us and for all who believe in Jesus.

That’s God’s grace to his people. It’s completely undeserved yet freely given in love and mercy for Jesus’ sake. Dear Christian, in his Word and sacraments, God reminds us again and again: I love you. I forgive you. Heaven is yours. You are mine.

That’s his amazing, wonderful will for us. Throughout your life, look to him and what he has done for you through your Savior Jesus.

Today as you pray, ask boldly and confidently that God would continue to strengthen the hearts of his people to believe in his will for them and to bring more and more people to saving faith in their Savior Jesus as well.
