“My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you?” (John 14:2).
Will there be enough room? Will I be welcome there?
Dear Christian, if you’ve ever wondered such things about our heavenly home, focus on the comforting words from our Savior Jesus, quoted above.
We don’t have to wonder if there will be enough room in heaven. We don’t have to wonder if we’ll be welcome there, because our Savior himself has said that there are many rooms, and if there weren’t, then why would he tell us that he’s going there to prepare a place for us?
Again and again through the pages of Scripture, God makes known to us who he is. He’s not the sort of God who tells us of a wonderful home in heaven free from sin, suffering, guilt, shame, and death and then shrugs and says, “Well . . . there might be room. You might be able to get in.”
No, God says, “I want you to be in heaven with me for all eternity. I love you. You’re my child. There is room and welcome there for you in my home. Always. I’m standing here with open arms, and I cannot wait to welcome you home.”
And then, if still we wonder, if still we doubt because we’re sinful people, our loving God points us to the cross. He points us to the forgiveness won there by our Savior Jesus. We’re welcomed into God’s family by the shedding of Jesus’ precious blood. Heaven is ours because of him.
What will those rooms in heaven look like, the rooms that our Savior is preparing for us? Dear Christian, only he knows.
But throughout life here in this sin-darkened world, we’re holding on to the unbreakable promises God has made us in his Word. No matter what it looks like, heaven is ours. That’s where we’re going.
There is room for us. There is welcome there for you and me. Not because we’ve earned or deserved a place in heaven in our Father’s house, but all because of Jesus and what he has done for us in his mercy and love.
With joy, we can tell others about what Jesus has done for them, because there is room and welcome for them in heaven too.
Our Father’s house has many rooms. Our Savior is preparing a place for us, and one day soon, he will return or call us home to be with him forever—just as he has promised.
Today as you pray, ask that God would continue to comfort his people with the knowledge and assurance that no matter what life looks like here on earth, heaven is our home—all because of Jesus.
