Effective parenting in today’s world is challenging to say the least. Hectic and chaotic schedules are stressful—as is the feeling of having to know the answers to the many questions raising children brings. This new series of blog posts addresses the challenges Christian fathers face in fulfilling their call to “bring [children] up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4). Each day this week, we will highlight a resource helpful to all dads in carrying out this God-given mission.
I’ve always thought parenting is one of the most guilt inducing jobs there are. Fathers especially are tasked with some heavy responsibilities.
Father’s Day is near, and this new blog series will not only help ease the challenges of fatherhood but also forge new confidence for dads.
I noticed it on the shelf, a book called Patient Parenting: Raising Your Kids in the Shadow of the Cross. I thought, That sounds like something all of us dads could use. It’s written by a man with decades of experience, including as a Christian counselor.
All of us fathers want to be successful (rather than the opposite), and there’s a chapter exactly on that! It takes us fathers into some simple pointers such as:
- letting your child see you treating your wife with respect and love.
- some great blessings fathers can pray for.
- what compassion looks like from a dad.
- having fun together.
We dads can gather some awesome encouragement from this helpful book, not only in the wise pointers it gives but especially because it bases the whole approach of parenting on the perfect answer to all mistakes and the motivation for positive progress: our great Forgiver, Jesus.
