The Seven Words of Jesus

In the gospels, we find that Jesus spoke seven different times while suffering on the cross on Good Friday. He may have said more than what we have in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, but the Holy Spirit decided in his infinite wisdom that he wanted these particular statements to be written down, preserved, and handed down through the ages all the way to you and me.

Why? Why these words?

Each of these seven “words” spoken by the Word made flesh in his final hours is important. Each reveals something incredible about our Savior. Each was spoken for your sake and mine.

As the apostle John wrote, these words are among those written “that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).

Remember that, dear Christian, as you listen to and meditate on these final words of Jesus during his suffering on the cross before his death.
