Why doesn’t the Bible tell us more?
Why doesn’t it give us every historical detail, every answer to life’s why, and every curiosity about heaven or how God works behind the scenes?
Because that was never its purpose.
The Bible wasn’t written to satisfy our curiosity. It was written to reveal our Savior. That’s the heart of it. That’s the reason the Spirit inspired every word—to bring us face-to-face with the mercy of God in Jesus Christ.
As the apostle John tells us, “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).
That’s why the Bible exists.
The Purpose of Scripture Is Salvation
We may long to know what angels look like, why some things happen the way they do, or what God’s full timetable is for our lives. But those are not the things our souls need most.
We need forgiveness. We need peace with God. We need a Savior.
And God gives us exactly what we need. He gives us Jesus.
Through the Bible, God reveals who he is, what he has done, and what he promises to do. It shows us his justice and his grace, his power and his compassion, his holiness and his deep love for sinners. It shows us the cross. It shows us the empty tomb. It shows us the Savior who lived in our place, died in our place, and rose to give us eternal life.
That’s why these words were written.
What God Has Revealed Is Enough
Could God have told us more? Certainly. But in his wisdom, he chose to give us everything necessary for faith and life.
Deuteronomy 29:29 reminds us, “The hidden things belong to the Lord our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, so that we carry out all the words of this law.”
God hasn’t told us everything, but he has told us what we need. His Word is sufficient. His grace is enough. And his promises are certain.
Even when questions remain unanswered, our salvation never is. Jesus has answered it with his blood.
Trust the Giver, Not Just the Gifts
At the heart of this is trust—not in what we understand, but in the One who understands all things. We trust that the God who loves us enough to send his Son also loves us enough to reveal what we truly need to know.
So we open our Bibles not to master every mystery but to know our Savior and what he has done for us. And in Jesus, we know enough to live, to die, and to live again.
A Prayer to Treasure God’s Revealed Truth
Lord, thank you for giving me your Word—not to answer every question I might have, but to answer the deepest cry of my heart. In your Word, you show me my Savior. In your promises, you give me peace. Help me to trust not in my understanding, but in your wisdom. Let me cling to what you have revealed and rest in what you have promised. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
