“Through [Jesus] you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God” (1 Peter 1:21).
What if I don’t have enough faith? What if I don’t believe strongly enough? What if I waver in my walk with Jesus or doubt that God’s Word is actually true? What then?
Troublesome questions like those above can fill believers’ hearts with uncertainty, fear, and worry.
When we start looking at ourselves to answer those questions, the devil has us right where he wants us. He masterfully pokes and prods us with accusations, delightedly reminding us of the times we’ve fallen short of God’s expectations for his children. He highlights our failures, our faltering faith, our sin, and our shame.
The painful truth is, we’re sinful people who waver in our walk with Jesus. We struggle to follow our Savior and hopelessly fail to live as he did—perfectly. We doubt. We fear. We worry.
If our faith and our belief in God and his Word are rooted in ourselves, we’ll never have enough faith. We’ll never believe strongly enough.
Thank God that our faith and hope are rooted in something much, much deeper than ourselves.
As Peter wrote in the verse above, our faith and hope are in God. And just like that, the devil’s accusations drift away like smoke on the wind.
Yes, we’re sinful people. But our faith and hope are in God, in whom we believe through our Savior Jesus. He rescued us from all our sins. He took them away, bearing them on the cross in our place.
Yes, we struggle to follow our Savior and hopelessly fail to live as he did, but Jesus lived a perfect life in our place. For us.
Yes, we doubt, we fear, and we worry. But our Savior’s perfect faith, unwavering confidence, and unshakable trust were all for us. And what did God do? He raised Jesus from the dead and glorified him so that we can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that what Jesus did for us is pleasing to God and accepted in his sight—and so are we.
All our sins are forgiven. We’re God’s dearly loved children. We have a home in heaven waiting for us. Live in those amazing truths, dear Christian, every day!
Jesus’ perfect faith is ours. We look to him and what he has done for us. He is where we find our confidence to walk through life in this sin-darkened world. He is where we find our hope of salvation. Our faith is in him, and through him, we believe in God, who keeps all of his promises to his children.
What if I don’t have enough faith? What if I don’t believe strongly enough? What if I waver in my walk with Jesus or doubt that God’s Word is actually true? What then?
Dear Christian, look to your Savior Jesus. Your faith is in him and what he has done for you. He is more than enough.
