Never Shaken

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1-2).

Long have the words of this psalm held comfort for Christians throughout the ages, all struggling with the doubts, insecurities, and fears that accompany life here on earth.

David filled this psalm with such beautiful words of absolute confidence. But not confidence in himself and his own abilities—no. He makes that clear later in verse 3 when he refers to himself as a “leaning wall” and a “tottering fence.” He would even go on to warn the psalm’s audience not to trust in the power of people—whether rich or poor—or to set their hearts on wealth but to trust in God alone.

David’s absolute confidence—and our own—is in God. That’s where it needs to be.

God is the only place where our souls find rest, despite the many burdens we carry. What a comfort to hear our Savior’s words in John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you.” We are given everything we need in the peace that comes from knowing that because of Jesus, all of our sins have been forgiven and we have a home in heaven waiting for us.

Exhausting as it may be to travel through life, we know that our salvation comes from God. We cling to the knowledge that he will see us through the shadowy vale of life here on earth—no matter how dark and dim it may be—to a brighter and more glorious day in heaven. Through every trial and tribulation, God is our rock and our salvation.

There are plenty of times when it certainly feels as though we are shaken—we stumble and fall into sin daily. The devil uses those moments to try and trap us in despair, self-loathing, and whatever else he can to get us to look at ourselves and what we’ve done instead of at our Savior and what he’s done for us.

Dear Christian, God is here for you. He is your rock, your fortress, and your salvation. Because of him—because of Jesus—you will not be shaken. You are God’s dearly loved child. He promises you that in his Word.

What a gracious God we have—a God who is not content to tell us just once that he is our salvation. Time and time again, throughout the pages of Scripture, he makes it absolutely clear to us who he is and what he has done to rescue us from our sins because he loves us so very much.

How well our God knows us! Think of all the different ways he shows his love for us—through the Word and sacraments and all the blessings he pours out on us every day.

“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.” Not because of who we are or anything we’ve done, but because of our God and what he has done for us.
