“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world” (Psalm 19:1-4).
God’s creation does an incredible job proclaiming his glory day after day and night after night. Merely by existing, what he’s created silently shouts to the ends of the world, “God is awesome! God is glorious!”
But as awesome as God’s creation—the world around us—is, it can only do so much.
Its existence declares God’s glory . . . but says nothing about creation’s desperate need—our desperate need—for salvation from sin, death, and the devil.
Its existence proclaims the work of God’s hands . . . but says nothing about the greatest work of our God’s hands, stretched out and nailed to a bloody cross to deliver sinful humankind from our spiritual enemies.
How incredible, how humbling it is that God gives the crown of his creation, humankind, the privilege and responsibility of sharing his greatest work with the world around us.
As the apostle Paul wrote in his letter to the Romans, “‘Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved’ [Joel 2:32]. How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” (Romans 10:13-14).
The heavens and skies are silent witnesses of God’s glory. As God’s children, we cannot remain silent.
And yet, to my shame, I stay silent so often. I let moments to share God’s Word with others pass me by. I fail to make the most of every opportunity that God puts before me to tell people in my life about Jesus. God, forgive me!
Maybe you feel a similar sense of shame at the opportunities you’ve missed too.
Dear Christian, know that Jesus came to live a perfect life in your place. He never let moments to share God’s Word with others pass him by. He made the most of every opportunity that God put before him to tell the people in his life about the gospel message they so desperately needed to hear.
Know that your Savior Jesus came to die a shameful death on a cross in your place. He died for all of your sins, including those times you’ve kept silent about your faith—whether from fear of rejection, mockery, or not knowing what to say. Your Savior Jesus paid for all of your sins. All of them.
And now, your Savior Jesus calls you, again and again, day after day, to speak. To share his gospel message with the people in your life.
